If you are one such person there are a few easy steps you can follow in order to become a better writer, whether you are writing a daily blog post or just trying to come up with 140 engaging characters on Twitter:

Step 1 Just Write! – Many people get stuck because as they are trying to write a creative and intelligent set of sentences they get bogged down, by editing each line as they go along. When you first sit down to write, do just that. Don’t worry for the time being about spelling or comma placement, get your ideas down first.

Step 2 Edit – After you have all your thoughts down and your draft is completed is the time to begin editing in earnest. Read your piece through once and immediately make note of any required changes that are glaringly obvious. Consider your initial choice of words too, could the prose be better, does what you have written actually make sense?

If you rely on a spellchecker to catch your errors be careful. The average program will catch most of them but if you wrote “your” when you really meant “you’re” it won’t correct you, the word is spelt right and this a computer, not a literature professor.

Step 3 Read it Out Loud – Read your piece out loud, either to yourself or to a friend. This will help you catch what you may have not by just visually reading the piece through, especially when it comes to proper punctuation. If you are not under a huge deadline put your work aside for an hour or so and then go back and read it through again. Does it still sound as good as you thought it did?

Follow these simple guidelines and you should find that writing for marketing purposes becomes easier every day, until one day you wake up and its almost second nature.

Just as they should be, most home business owners are completely enamored by the products or services they offer. After all, having a passion for what you do is essential for home business success.

The problem is too many entrepreneurs tailor their products or services around their own personal likes and dislikes, giving little thought to what the actual consumer wants. If your product has no real appeal then all the clever marketing in the world is probably not going to make more than a couple of sales. Therefore, market research is one of the most important things any home business owner should do before a website launch.

Establishing who your target market is, is essential. For instance if you create personalized children’s books there is little point in targeting childless singles right? Possibly, but they may have relatives or friends for whom they would purchase these books for. Try to discover who the target market seems to be for a competitor’s product or service. Check their Twitter and Facebook accounts to see what kinds of people follow them, or read their blog to get an idea of how they promote their business.
// ]]>

Once your product is ready for launch keep testing and researching. Solicit your first customers for their honest feedback and use what they have to say to make the product even more appealing. Consumer feedback is invaluable, even to the biggest businesses.

Loving what you do is great, and a sure fire way to help your home business have a better chance for success. However understanding and listening to your customers wants and needs is the real key and your business should never stop evolving in order to meet those needs.

Affiliate marketing can be a big source of income for writers, especially bloggers. But what do those who are successful in the industry know that others do not? Here are a few of the secrets of successful affiliate marketers:

Know Your Audience – Your affiliate links need to be helpful to your readers. Consider why they come to site in the first place and choose your affiliate programs based around that interest. If you blog about baseball don’t include big ads for printer ink just because they have a high potential payoff. Your readers are there to read up on stats, scores and team gossip; printers are not likely to be on their mind at the moment. Purchasing a new replica jersey? Your content may just pique their interest enough that they go right off and do that.

Show that You are Trustworthy – Readers are savvy, they know an affiliate link when they see one. If you break their trust in your opinion by promoting a worthless or “dodgy” product that you do not believe in but, has a high payoff they will feel either ignore or possibly stop visiting the site. New rules governing bloggers are making honesty in blogging even more important. As of December 1st bloggers are required by the FTC to declare in writing to their readers if they are being compensated in any way to mention a certain product or service, which is making a difference to the way bloggers are approaching their daily posts.

Be Helpful

Throwing together a quick list of your favorite books chocked full of affiliate links is unlikely to be successful. Writing a careful and original review of one, with the affiliate link added in a more subtle manner is far more likely to get the results you are hoping for. Think of affiliate ads and links as complements to your content, not simply standalone advertisements.

Remain Relevant

Keep up to date on all the latest offerings from your affiliate programs and change out your ads on a regular basis. Seeing something visually new and stimulating may motivate a regular reader to finally click on that link for a product or service he has seen on your site many times before.

Many home business owners use email as one of their primary forms of communication with their customers and clients. On one hand this is great: it cuts down on phone time, your customers can easily send a request at any time of the day and, emails are much “greener” than traditional faxes.

However, there is a downside. If you overlook one email from a regular client or customer the relationship could suffer. Therefore organizing your email inbox is as essential as organizing your desk, if not more so. Here are a few ways you can manage your emails more efficiently:

Set up regular times to check your inbox: Checking your inbox twice an hour wastes precious time that could be spent far more productively. Set a schedule for checking emails and it’s not a bad idea to let others know what it is, so they know when to expect a reply.

Use Folders to manage communication: Some emails cannot be dealt with right away, or you may need to refer back to them several times during the course of a project. Setting up folders within your email program helps keep clutter out of your inbox and still ensures you can quickly access an important missive with just the click of a mouse.

Respond to Emails promptly: Just as you might expect a phone call to be returned promptly your customers and clients will expect the same with an email reply. Even if you do not have the time to answer a query or request immediately (or you need to do some research first) send a quick acknowledgment. Letting your customers know you “are on it” will give them peace of mind – at least temporarily:)

Make use of the signature line: Too many miss the marketing opportunity that exists in the signature line of their email. Have a website? Add that to your signature. If you are one of the many home business owners using social media sites for promotional purposes add those links too. Another trick is to add a memorable quote to the end of your emails. If it is clever, inspirational or funny it will stick in people’s minds and they will begin to associate the sentiment behind it with you and your home business.
For this reason home business owners are always on the lookout for new and effective ways to boost their sales and expand their company. One growing opportunity for home businesses to market themselves effectively and inexpensively is via internet radio.

If you love to talk and share information an online radio show might just be the perfect promotional opportunity for you to take advantage of. One of the biggest online radio networks, Blog Talk radio, actually lets you broadcast your show on their network for free.

To host a Blog Talk show all you need is a telephone line and a computer, no expensive sound or recording equipment required. Listeners can “call in live” just like they would to any regular radio show, or they can download an archive episode for later listening.

There are already thousands of businesses using sites like Blog Talk Radio to promote their home based business and more are joining them every day. To make an effective show you have to come up with engaging and interesting content of course but, that can be even easier than creating it in written form, as most successful home business owners are happy to discuss their venture with anyone, anywhere, everywhere. They have to be for their company to grow.

Adding an internet radio station to your home business marketing plan can really pay off; you will be able to connect with a new audience as well as make important networking connections with other entrepreneurs just like you.
