The idea of working from home is a very appealing one for many people, but it takes far more discipline and hard work than many people imagine. Whatever home business venture you intend to undertake there a few hard questions you need to ask yourself before making the decision to go it alone.
Will you actually really work?
When you hold down a regular 9-5 job you can’t stop to pull a few weeds, do a few loads of laundry, watch TV or spend time on Facebook (well maybe you do this one at work). However, you can do all of these things and much more when you are working from home. You can easily see your day slip away by not staying focused. You need to ask yourself if you will be able to set yourself a real work schedule, even though you are at home, and stick to it.
Do you know when enough’s enough?
On the other hand there are those work at home entrepreneurs who feel like that in order to make a success of their home based venture they can never stop working. They are still working at 9pm on a Saturday evening while the rest of the world kicking back and relaxing. Their families may actually spend less time with them even though they are working from home. It does take a lot of work and dedication to get a home based business off the ground. However, if you allow it to rob you of the rest of your life the result may be the failure of your venture.
Can you say no to other people?
Friends and family who are working in the “outside world” may find it hard to grasp the concept that even though you are home, you are working too (maybe harder than they are much of the time). The obvious requests will come, “Can you watch little so and so for a few hours since you’re home”? “Can you run to the store for me?” “Can you walk my dog/pick up my dry cleaning/weed my garden?” The answer to all of these requests has to be no. You are at work too. No, some of them won’t understand and will think you are being rude or simply blowing them off. But to make a success of your home based venture you have take it as seriously as you would a “regular “job.
Working from home is never as easy as some commercials you may have seen. No, you cannot go off sailing or to the Bahamas while your business makes money for you without any effort on your part (well not at first anyway.) The rewards of working from home are many, and the satisfaction of knowing that you have built a business by yourself is immense. You simply need to keep in mind that it is as much of a “job” as any other and that success takes hard work, wherever you work.
